Radiator Repair - Precision Auto

AUTO RADIATOR REPAIR IN GERMANTOWN, MD

Keeping Engines from Overheating

When the cooling system fails, the most obvious sign would be your engine’s temperature gauge on your instrument panel. In newer vehicles, there is often an audible alarm or notification that will let you know if the engine has reached a dangerous temperature, and it’s crucial to turn the engine off in these situations to avoid further damage. If you notice white smoke billowing out from under the hood, it could mean that there is a puncture or hole in the radiator where the engine coolant is leaking or perhaps a loose or damaged hose. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to bring your vehicle to Precision Auto quickly before you become stranded.

CAUSES OF RADIATOR ISSUES:

  • Leaking hoses
  • Thermostat stuck in open/closed position
  • The fan has stopped spinning

Due to the heat produced by the engine, pressure is created within the cooling system. For the coolant to be effective, it needs to be able to flow consistently and maintain that pressure. Hoses that are faulty or that have developed leaks release the pressure in the system and cause coolant to drain. If the engine’s thermostat fails, the valve that it operates can get stuck in the closed position, which doesn’t allow coolant to circulate and cool the engine, meaning that it will overheat. If this valve is stuck open, the coolant will pass through the engine before the engine heats up, which prevents it from reaching the correct operating temperature (especially during the winter months). In other cases, the radiator fan may stop working, which will yield the radiator essentially useless. As the radiator is a key component of the cooling system, this causes a significant problem, and your vehicle will overheat. It’s important to stay on top of the radiator or other cooling system issues and deal with them promptly by having these components checked regularly to ensure proper working order.

How Radiators Work

Your vehicle burns fuel via internal combustion, so naturally, your engine is going to get pretty hot as you’re driving down the road. The engine’s radiator is responsible for keeping the engine temperature in check at all times, and our expert team of certified technicians at Precision Auto in Germantown, Maryland, are trained to ensure that your radiator does its job properly! When issues arise with the engine’s cooling system, it can cause the engine components to overheat. When there’s too much heat, these components can malfunction, leaving you with costly repairs and an inevitable roadside breakdown. To combat this, coolant circulates through certain components to transfer and disperse the heat as necessary. Your radiator takes in outside air while your car is in motion to help keep the coolant temperature down and serves as a key component in the cooling process. Sometimes issues can arise that will call for radiator repair or maintenance, so it’s important to keep an eye on your fluids and gauges to determine if service is required.

YOU MAY NEED THIS SERVICE IF:

  • Engine is overheating
  • White smoke emits from beneath your hood
  • Coolant leaking below the radiator
  • Your heat or A/C is not working effectively
